Orphans & Church Launches

This past weekend exposed me to multiple missions and I just wanted to highlight them quickly.

I have a friend - Molly - who is Cambodia right now.  She works with orphans and shared the following in her last e-mail to me:

“I have some sad news from the Orphanage, last week Joel, one of the newest babies here passed away.  He was only a few months old and very sick.  I’m not sure exactly what he had, because I can’t figure out the word in English, but he didn’t make it.  Even in the sadness, for the last 3 weeks of his life, everyday someone has held him, sung to him and loved him, probably more then he has ever felt in his short life.  I continue to think about him and all the other babies over the world who have passed away in their first months of life.  I think about all the babies that die and there are no tears for them.  God loves these little kids so much, my heart aches for them to know their creator and follow in his footsteps.”

At our church yesterday we had a guy from Haiti come and lead worship.  JB works with orphans and receives money from us to stay open.  He shared the miracle story that I’m sure you’ve all heard in different settings but for us it was personal.  We were the ones who sent the money at the last minute and because of it 76 orphans have an orphanage.  Currently we have two families that have adopted children from Haiti with two more kids in process.  One little guy (age 8 or so) was the background percussion during worship and he just jammed out.

Yesterday, I finally saw Christian (don’t know his last name) again after a few months.  He is very excited about the church plant and being a missional church.  Since our last conversation we had gotten him some money to go to South Africa.  While there it became clear that he is suppose to move there and he leaves later this week.  He will be working with five different communities dealing primarily with children who are orphans because of the AIDS crisis.

I have a friend who had their first preview service yesterday in the southern burbs of Chicago and this is what he reported back:

“It was a great Sunday yesterday!  The team and I were blown away at how good God really is.  The morning went off without any train wrecks, all teams were prepared, and the place looked great.  Without any advertising, we had 112 people for worship!  I was very encouraged.  God is very good.”

If you are near Frankfort Illinois or just want to learn from what someone else is doing you can contact Paul Vroom by hitting the website at Missio Dei here.

Also saw that another member of VOX launched yesterday and you can read about it here.
