The Sleep Out
Last Friday and Saturday Night was the second annual Ottumwa Community Outreach Ministry Sleep Out. Wow we might need to work on that title because it is really long winded.
I set out with my Dell Computer Box stuffed with two sleeping bags, four blankets, and a pillow. Before I left the house I told Jenny that I hoped my I Pod was charged. She said, “Yeah, because nothing says homelessness quite like an I Pod.” I was humbled - but brought it anyways.
Upon arriving I was greeted with a typical random event. I say typical because strange things seem to happen around me quite often. I am no more then five steps out of my car when I hear screeching tires and boom - a deer gets tagged by a car on the highway. 10 seconds later another car attempts to finish the job. A group of High Schoolers who were at the sleep out were more then curious and take off running to the scene. When we get to the top of the hill we notice the deer is still alive but is causing some near hits on the road so two guys go out and drag the 10 point buck off the road. Then one kid calls his boss and says if he hurry’s he can have the deer. The dude shows up in 2 minutes and is already to go down and finish the job when the cop car pulls in. Out busts this woman with her gun flying and is yelling everyone step back. She is just waving her gun around. I’m like take it easy lady your scaring me. Then the boss dude says, “Oh, I was going to stick it.” and shows his knife. The cop lady is like, “No, I’ll take care of it.” Boss dude, “OK.” Cop lady, “I guess you can stick it.” Boss dude, “No if you want to pop it go ahead.” Cop lady, “Actually I don’t feel like cleaning my gun tonight so go ahead.” Boss dude, “Cool, can I get a free tag.” Cop lady, “Sure - I’ll go fill one out.” It was like I was watching a modern day love connection first date.
Those who don’t like yucky details - quit reading.
So the guy with two other guys jump on the deer - slit its throat and you can hear the gasp. I have to admit it grossed me out (made me sad). Yes it was way better for the deer but it just seems cruel when you see it right in front of your own face. No this doesn’t make me want to stop eating meat. I love meat - just don’t make me get it from live to plate.
Later on in the evening I was reflecting on the old testament and the sacrifices and just the pure craziness of it all.

Marty, this would have made a truly excellent Chaos story.
You need to write a book some day of all of the random stories of your life.
